Title:  Myriad of Motivational Mathematics

Credits or Clock Hours:  One Mathematics professional development for each part of institute OR 10 clock hours for each part of the institute.

The University requires ten hours of lecture type contact for each credit awarded.  Although this will not be direct lecture instruction, it will not be considered a lab course.  Therefore, for each part, I must plan 10 hours of contact time with the group.

Purpose:  The purpose of this professional development institute is to expose teachers to math methods that enable integration, introduction, practice and/or review of “Standards” topics with a “hands-on” emphasis.

Number of Courses:  The instructor is willing to facilitate two ore three parts of the institute, depending on teacher interest.  Therefore, a teacher may earn one, two or three credits OR 10, 20 or 30 clock hours OR combination of credits and clock hours.

Cost:  These sessions are being subsidized by the CWU (southern) GEAR UP Grant.   GEAR UP will pay for substitutes or mileage if the class is at CWU.  Otherwise, we pay 75% of the tuition for the class.  The tuition for 1 quarter hour is $50.00 so your part, if you want credit, will be $12.50 per credit If you want 3 graduate professional math credits, it will cost you only $37.50.

Site and dates:  This is where I need help from you.  First of all I need to know if you are interested in this type of professional development.  If so, what site would you like to meet?  What type of topics would you like covered? What time of day would you prefer?

Possible sites are: CWU campus, Royal City or Othello, Yakama or Highland.  If you chose Royal City or Othello, Yakama or Highland, each part will be offered twice; one at each site.  If at CWU, there will be only one part offered.  Part means one ten hour institute for 1 credit or 10 clock hours.  These ten hours will not be on one day.  If we meet at CWU, or the other two sites, we could meet for 6 hours on a Saturday or Sunday and 4 hours on Friday (for Saturday) and 4 hours on Monday (for Sunday).  GEAR UP will pay substitute costs.

Possible Topics:  Using History of Math to Motivate Students, Pentaminos, Tangrams, Circles, Literature Connections, Audio/Visual Learning ideas and demonstrations, Algebra Tiles, Polydrons, Games, Fractals. Area and Perimeter activities and Graphing Calculators.

What do I Need from You?  Please fill in the attached form and return to me at CWU +or your site director.  I will make decisions based on your input and send you the actual times, places & topics.

I really need your input so please don’t put this off or ignore this plea for your input.

Thank you so much for your assistance.
